Remote ID vs privacy: what Liverpool businesses need to know about drone photography in 2026
22 May 2026 · 7 min read

The 2026 Remote ID rules, what they mean for commissioning drone work, and how reputable operators handle the privacy questions clients ask.
From 2026, every commercial drone operating in UK airspace broadcasts a Remote ID signal — a digital number plate readable by anyone with a compatible receiver. For clients, this changes very little about how you commission work. For operators, it changes a lot about accountability.
Remote ID does not affect privacy directly. The legal position on photographing identifiable people from the air remains the same: filming public spaces is generally lawful, filming into private property is not, and event photography requires either clear consent or signage at the venue entrance.
When commissioning drone photography in 2026, ask your operator three things: Are you compliant with current Remote ID broadcast rules? How do you handle the consent and signage for the venue? And what's your data retention policy on the raw footage? A serious operator has clean answers to all three.
